Glorify God with Body, Soul, and Spirit

David Rutkin • Feb 10, 2024

God wants our full body, soul, and spirit yielded to Him.

After a series of commands regarding  Christian conduct, the Apostle Paul wrote, "And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Thess. 5:23).

The Trinity explained in the Bible is essential to  Christianity on so many levels.  Our God is one God manifest in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matt. 28:19, 1 John 5:7-8). All three of these manifestations live inside of us as born again believers. God is in us (Eph. 4:6). Jesus is in us (John 14:20, Col. 1:27). The Holy Spirit is in us (John 14:17, Rom. 8:11, 1 Cor. 3:16). Moreover, as Christians we are completely identified with Christ through the baptism of the Holy Spirit which places believers spiritually "in Christ" through His finished work as the God-man, reconciling us with our Heavenly Father; spiritually, we died with Christ, we were buried with Christ, we rose back to life with Christ, and we ascended into Heaven with Christ, seated with God the Father (Rom. 6:3-10, 1 Cor. 12:13, 27, Eph. 2:4-7, Col. 2:12-15). This is a marvelous and beautiful truth!

Now, just as God is a Trinity, we as human beings are also a three-part person. We possess a body, soul, and spirit.  When man understands the Gospel of their salvation; and trusts on Christ alone to save them; they become saved, sealed, and sanctified by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:12-14, 4:30). The believer's trinity is to imitate God's Trinity in all aspects of our life. We have a world-conscious through our body (our five senses). We have a a self-conscious through our soul (emotions, will, desires, intellect). Lastly, we have a God-conscious through our spirit (faith, hope, prayer, worship).

God's Trinity is manifest in the following verses: "This is he (Jesus Christ) that came by water (body) and blood (spirit), even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit (God) that beareth witness, because the Spirit (God) is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father (God), the Word (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the Spirit (God), and the water (Jesus), and the blood (Holy Spirit): and these three agree in one" (1 John 5:6-8).  Remember, Jesus' father (God) divinely birthed Him physically through the virgin Mary which is how we can know the blood (sinless blood) in this passage of Scripture refers to the spirit aspect (spiritual sinlessness which was outpoured in physical sinlessness) of the Trinity of Christ during His humanity.

Jesus' life and ministry on Earth is our perfect example to imitate (John 8:28-29).  His Trinity was completely and totally yielded to God the Father. His body was in subjection at all times. His soul was fully in tune with all aspects related to God the Father. Lastly, His spirit was divinely paired with God the Father every moment of His physical existence. This is our perfect portrait of spiritual and physical truth united with the Holy Trinity.

May we seek to honor God fully with our three-part person on a daily basis. This is our divine goal to strive for: God is most glorified as we yield our whole being to Him.
